May Principal’s Message

As spring has finally sprung I am excited to see the green grass, the budding trees and even the tulips popping out of the ground.

Congratulations

I would like to acknowledge and congratulate Will Selk for being one of forty students in Alberta to be part of the Minister’s Youth Council (MYC). Students are from junior and senior high with diverse interests, identities, backgrounds and perspectives from all regions of Alberta. Students on the council provide their perspectives on several education topics.

Students are members of the Minister’s Youth Council for a 10-month term that aligns with the school year. During the school year, the council attends three meetings. I appreciate Will’s parents for letting me know that he was chosen to be a representative on this council. Unfortunately, I did not know about this until recently but still wanted to acknowledge the fact that this is an amazing accomplishment.

Artemis Lightfoot and Keira Still won SciFusion Science Fair at the University of Lethbridge, and 3rd place in the Science Olympics - by designing a Moonlander.  Well done ladies!

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Donna Branch on being inducted into the ASAA Hall of Fame in the category “coach”.  Donna has been an excellent coach influencing so many of our young women along the way.  This ceremony will take place in June in Edmonton.

Safety

No matter how many times we tell our little ones as well as our older students to be careful when crossing the road, riding their bikes, or driving their vehicles, things happen.  PLEASE be extra attentive around the school when driving a vehicle.

The grade 1-5 students will have an opportunity to participate in a Bike Rodeo on May 9th in Raymond. They will learn the importance of bike safety and obeying the rules of the road. They will ride through a mini course using hand signals for turns and stops.

School Musical

Shrek is in our building! Our talented students have been rehearsing tirelessly to showcase their incredible talents.  Tickets are going fast, get yours today. Call the office or go to the school’s website LINK. Performances run from  May 15 - 18th. Evening performances start at 7 and the matinees on Friday and Saturday will start at 1:00 p.m.

Graduation:

With the end of the school year in sight, our students continue to impress us with their dedication to academic excellence. I commend every one of them for their hard work and perseverance throughout the year. As we approach the month of May we are excited to celebrate the graduation of our grade 12 students on May 31st.  The community is invited to the ceremony at the school starting around 7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium.

Track and Field:

Elementary track and field day at the school has not been set but the divisional one will be June 4th at the Raymond track

Junior high the divisional meet will be May 28th with zones being on June 4th in Lethbridge.

Teacher Appreciation Week:

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6-10, and we encourage parents to show appreciation to teachers for their continued dedication to teaching our kids.

As always, thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Together, we can make the remainder of the school year a memorable and successful one for our students.

If you have not done so, we ask that you please pay your resource fees ASAP or make arrangements at the school office. We accept cash, debit, or e-transfers for all fees. You may use the following email address for all e-transfers:  ssfees@westwind.ab.ca. Thank you!

The month of May will be the last month the parent council will be doing Hot Lunch. I want to thank the many volunteers who came to the school on Wednesdays to prepare lunches for the students.
